After leaving Memphis, we flew north for about 15 minutes to Millington Municipal Airport, where my nephew executed a touch-and-go landing. Millington Municipal is the former Memphis Naval Air Station, which at one time hosted squadrons of A4 Skyhawks, P2 Neptunes, P3 Orions, S2 Trackers, C118's and C9's. Now all that remains are general aviation aircraft. NAS Memphis was the onetime home to the Navy's technical training command, NATTC. Those large operations were shipped down to Pensacola, FL a few years ago, and as a replacement, the Bureau of Personnel (BUPERS) was brought in from Washington. I guess we're lucky the base wasn't closed altogether.
